Let me start by saying that I will not be complaining about the heat. So don't let my post title deceive you. I don't mind the excessive temperatures that we are having. Actually, I most definitely prefer the steamy heat waves to the bitter cold snaps. I cope with heat quite well. Here's the problem: I have been forced to use air conditioning for years now. Though I may tolerate the heat, well...Josh? Not so much. He's more than happy to live with the technology of air conditioning. I mean, heck. He is a heating an air conditioning guy, right? And with children came allergies. With allergies came the need to block the outdoor air out. Open windows + allergies = bad time for Alex. So here I sit in my 77 degree house all summer long. Apparently the years have slowly desensitized me to the effects of air conditioning. Those effects hit me this weekend. It's hay season which means I get to go on my annual trip to the fields in the blistering heat and work my butt off under a blazing sun. Generally I do just fine. Keep in mind this is one of the biggest heat waves we've had in a while. (Actually I have to tell myself that to make myself feel better about what I'm about to say.) At the end of the first day of hay hauling, I sat down for one last break before unloading the last 30 bales of hay. I began to get nauseous. I could feel the water I'd just guzzled swirling around in my over-heated belly while mixing with a torment of acid. Not good. I stood up and felt the world begin to spin. Dizzy now. Great. My head had already been pounding for an hour or two and the bright flashing warning signs starting making sense in my head. I'd suddenly felt as though I'd just been run over.
What did they say in my first aid class? Oh yeah...heat exhaustion. Yep. That was it. Ugh...
I went inside to cool down but it just wasn't helping. I got home later and tried to feel better. It took pretty much all night for me to feel half as good as I should have felt. Two days later it was back into the field for round two. Luckily we had our faithful annual hay hands Tommy and Chris to help. And then there's my mom. *sigh* My mother. She's got to be one of the toughest women I know. She's got 25 years on me and could run circles around me while juggling flaming pitchforks without even stopping for a break. Of course, she was pulling the 'mom card' with me and made me drive instead of stack hay (my normal job) in hopes of keeping me from dying...or some blather like that. So here's my mom...working the job that should be mine because of my frustrating new found weakness. Granted, once we got the hay loaded I had to work my buns off unloading the two trailers, but it was evening so heat exhaustion wasn't really going to be an issue. Of course, I fully plan on never letting this happen again. In a last desperate attempt to not feel like the weak link, I will blame the only thing I can. Air conditioning. They call it 'air conditioning' because the cool air is meant to condition you in to needing it. Oh well. I'm gonna go curl up in a blanket on the couch now. It's freezing in here.

When Captain America was 4...
Not long ago I did a photo of Alex as Green Lantern. Well, he's been begging me to get him a Captain America costume. This kid is insanely obsessed with playing dress up. Especially super heroes. Seeing as how I don't want to spend an absurd amount of money on a costume (it's garage sale or bust for these bad boys), I decided to make him one. One cardboard cat litter box, some paint, blue cloth and an hour of sewing later, I made him an absolutely hideous replica of the Captain America mask. Of course, I then went on to play in photo shop to get something a bit like his Green Lantern picture. Of course he loves it and wants to look at the photos often. Alex...what a character.

Wiggly Wrap Up
All in all, going to the Wiggles was a wonderful time. I must say that having two kids the age Alex and Abby are helped. Last year, Abby was still in her 'I don't know if I'm ready to be a big girl' stage. This year, it was much easier and a lot more fun. I'm glad that we took the time and effort to take this trip. Vacations are few and far between for us and if a two day trip is what it takes to keep a tradition, then that's what it will be. It was fast. It was crazy. It was hot as can be. But above all else...it was fun. It's kind of sad to think that one day the kiddos won't be interested in the Wiggles anymore. I will miss those days. For now I'll just treasure the moment and we'll continue to go for as many years as we can. Shoot...at this rate, it looks like the Wiggles will be around when my kids have kids. Jeff Wiggle had a pacemaker put in and is still wiggling! He'll probably still be around in 20 more years wiggling. So there's always takin' the grandkids, right? Thanks Wiggles! You made our little family trip one to remember. Until next year!
Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Alex's favorite. He does all the motions just like his hero Sam.
They end the show with their most famous song, Hot Potato. Parents and children alike get to dance to this one. You see that Josh wasn't shy in taking my picture. No comments on the blog so I'm afraid I won't be posting a video. I'm sure you are all devastated.
One last shot of the Wiggles before it's over.
And then the classic confetti explosion ending.
Everyone, including me, reaches out for the confetti rain. It's magical, really.
And someone was nice enough to take our family photo for us. I hope to have this same photo every year as the kids grow. Good times.

The Wiggles 2011 - More Pictures!
I can't believe it. I'm actually blogging two days in a row. If you haven't noticed I've been failing at blogging lately. It's a mood thing. You have blogging ups and blogging downs. I was on a significantly obvious blogging down. Anyhow, back to the subject. The Wiggles! Does my genuine excitement for them come off too strong for a grown adult? Yes? Oh well. I guess I'll stop raving about the wonderful people they are and the many ways they help children around the world...at least for the moment. So off we go now...
The tour this year is in celebration of their 20th birthday. 20 years...wow! I can't believe these guys were around when I was 12 years old. Fun fact: Sam (The yellow one) is the same age as me. :-) well...he's a few months older, but you get the point. Here Murray is carrying a cake that Anthony is going to steal. The old 'pie in the face' gag is a major hit for kids and Anthony was very good at taking those hits.
A song called "England Swings" is what they are singing here. Alex and Abby love this song.
Anthony showing how healthy his lungs are by playing a native Australian instrument called the didgeridoo. I hope I spelled that right. Very cool instrument.
Captain Feathersword. He's a hoot...totally love this guy.
A classic Wiggles song: Fruit Salad. Here's a fun note: The lady in green on the stage is the winner of the 5th Wiggle contest. I actually was about one click away from entering this contest because you get to go on stage and actually dance with the Wiggles. How awesome would that be? Of course, judging from my inability to walk a straight line when near anyone famous, this could have ended badly if I'd actually won. Of course, at the end of the song Anthony said, "Give a blueberry a hug!" (He's dressed as a blueberry.) Josh pointed at me and laughed saying, "Awww honey! You missed out on that?? That's gotta suck!" Oh well, congrats to the lucky winner! She did great. Another case of coulda, shoulda, woulda...grrrr...
Here, Captain is telling Jeff's stand-in, Brad, how to do successful improv. We laughed so hard. Well done Brad! Jeff is surely proud of you! That's got to be some pressure filling in the shoes of the Wiggle who's never missed a show until now.
Sam: aka...Alex's hero. I was sad when Alex went into defensive mode at the time Sam walked into the audience. He so looked forward to giving his yellow rose to Sam. Abby did it for him and he regretted it later. On the up side, this guy has an amazing voice. If anyone is looking for some birthday gift ideas for me, he has a solo album called Colour of Love. It's an import though so is waaaay too expensive for me.
Dost mine eyes deceive me?? Is that...*gasp*...me?? In a photo?? Yup...huh...I look way too happy here, don't I? You should have seen me groovin' to Hot Potato. Oh yeah...I've got the moves. I believe Josh took video of it. Comment with cheers and I might even post it for the world to see.

And more to come...

The Wiggles 2011
When we got to the hotel the kids were...well...a little too excited about it. You can tell that my children lead a somewhat sheltered life when it comes to the finer things there are. They literally were excited about everything in the hotel. "Mom!! Look!! Beds!!" And of course my personal favorite, "Wow!! They have a closet!!" which they spent a good amount of time going in and out of. They wanted to walk the halls, use the elevator and swim in the pool nearly every second of the day. It was endearing in a way.
Friday was the big day. Concert time! I'll do a two-part blog to cover all the best pictures. Maybe even three-part if it calls for it. When we got to the event center, there were kids dressed up in Wiggles gear everywhere, but Alex was the envy of many. In his Sam Wiggle outfit, complete with microphone, belt and striped pants, he had children begging parents to get an outfit just like his. It was cute. The kids were super excited and I was on the edge of my seat in hopes of having Anthony walk down my aisle. (I was on the last seat of the row.) No luck, but I did get to speak to Murray and almost fell over myself trying to not get run over by Sam as I tried to get a video of Abby giving him her Rose for Dorothy. It's official. I become a bumbling idiot when I'm around someone famous. *slaps head in shame* What is wrong with me?? Oh well. Alex had a brief 15 minute period when he was not happy to be there. I finally got to the core of this little issue. It's me. He hates it when I'm paying so much positive attention to someone else. Great. He hates it when ol' mom has a good time. Once I tickled him and gave him some positive attention he was dancing in the aisles and laughing all the way.
The concert flew by and I was super-bummed when it was time to leave the hotel and come back to reality/home. Hotel life isn't something I've really experienced much of and I must admit that it was relaxing and quite fun. Of course, for $20 extra bucks a night I could have been at the same hotel as The Wiggles and caught a glimpse of those wonderful Aussie men in their normal clothes...but coulda, shoulda, woulda...right? Now it's off to the photos!
Josh and the kiddos pre-concert. What a fabulous time this was!
Pre-show - Alex was wiggling non-stop in anticipation.

The Wiggles! If you look close enough you'll notice that the purple Wiggle isn't Jeff. :-( Not that you'd notice if you're not a fan, but nevertheless. He had a wonderful stand-in named Brad who's been a Wiggly dancer for a long time now. Jeff had heart surgery unexpectedly to get a pacemaker put in a week before this and couldn't fly to the U.S.A. to tour for at least a month. Get well Jeff!
Alex was in high spirits to give his bones for Wags to Murray. Murray looked down and said, "Hey there Sam! Oh! You look just like Sam!" Then he smiled and laughed and looked at me to say, "I thought he was Sam!" I smiled and told him how Sam's his favorite and then thanked him. I spoke to Murray!! I rock! (I'm aware at how pathetic I sound to the innocent bystander but dude! It's Murray!) It was so cute. Alex walked right up to Murray and tapped him on the arm to get his attention. Murray instantly addressed him. One of the reasons I love these guys. Great with kids.
The kids and Josh enjoying the show.
Human Pyramid with Captain Feathersword.
Abby became this social butterfly over night. She marched right up to Sam and handed him Alex's yellow rose. (Though Sam is Alex's hero, this was right around the time he was pouting. Weird kid.) Sam was pointed out to Abby how the rose is yellow like him. I started up the video about right here in hopes of getting video with Abby. Sam started moving and then I stumbled around like a moron, failing in my video attempt all the while looking like a crazy lady. Mom: Fail.
More pictures coming soon!

It's Wiggle Time!
Tomorrow we head off to see our second Wiggles concert and we couldn't be more excited! Tonight the kiddos were literally bouncing up and down on the couches pretending that we were at the concert. They were singing Hot Potato at the top of their little lungs. I must say that I am equally excited to go. Would it be too much for me to make a sign that says "Alex and Abby's mom loves Anthony!"? Probably a bit over the top, so I'll stay low profile. We have an aisle seat so if he just happens to be dancing up our aisle, I can always just yawn and stretch at precisely the same time he walks by. Okay, okay. I'm not really that brazen. I'll just quietly oggle from the crowd. If he does walk by, you might hear a subtle giggle though on the video. We get the joyfulness of driving for six hours of course, but it is totally worth it. I'm not sure how much longer Alex will be an avid fan of the Wiggles so we are going to do this for as long as we can. Seriously though, if it was Barney he loved I wouldn't drive more than 30 minutes to see him. Wait a second...make that 30 seconds. I suppose that's the perk of having your kids love a group of grown men who look good in black pants, have a great sense of humor and have awesome voices. Anthony Wiggle in black pants? Hot. Barney in black pants? Creepy. Lucky me. My kids know how to pick the good ones! Let's Wiggle!

Tacos
I have a very vivid memory. I'm hoping that this will be a good thing in the future to ward off memory loss but that's beside the point. One memory I have is especially strong and it's completely random. This particular memory encompasses all the senses and for some reason it is one of my favorite ones. What does it involve, you ask? Tacos. Odd? Yes. I agree. But nevertheless, this memory still stands strong in my mind. I remember walking into our old mobile home during the summer. A day when it was blazing hot with zero wind. It was a rare day because this day, my parents gave us a treat of turning on the air conditioner. We didn't get this very often. Air conditioning wasn't a way of life, it was a treat. So I remember walking into the strangely cool house after playing in the 105 degree evening heat to the smell of tacos wafting through the air accompanied by the sizzling of the meat in the skillet. My mom was at the stove and she smiled at me as I walked into the front room to find my brothers and dad lying on the vents and the floor watching Flash Gordon on the TV. I can still smell the tacos, feel the cool artificial air on my skin, and hear the Flash Gordon theme song in my head. I don't know why, but this memory is one of my best ones and I still smile when I think of it. Oddly enough, I can't seem to instill this love of Tacos into my kids. Abby isn't quite appreciative of food...at all. It's cereal or bust with her. But Alex is the culprit to my lack of taco days in our house. I bet you think it's because of his milk allergy and that no cheese equals no tacos and that I'm talking about that particular issue. Nope! Not at all. We use soy cheese with his tacos. Easy cheesy...er...not so cheesy I mean. Here's the problem. Alex actually loved tacos. We ate them about three times and he gobbled them right up. Until that one fateful day (about two years ago) when he just happened to catch a stomach bug the very same day he ate tacos. You know what this means. That night he chucked up the tacos. We all know how horrible just about anything tastes on it's way back up but tacos can be right up there with the worst of things to...um...regurgitate. And now, to this very day, he cries if I mention the word 'tacos'. He says this, "But mom! I can't eat tacos! They'll make me throw up!!"
*sigh*
I guess my good memory will just have to suffice for now. Hopefully he'll outgrow his fear of tacos and eventually unlink the two things. The ironic thing? When I was pregnant with him, the only thing I could eat for the first three months without puking was...you guessed it...tacos.
Just thought I'd share.
