Apostrophe What??

Teaching a language naturally is wonderful and all, but you really don't need to do much to pass on the knowledge. As children grow, they will inevitably pick up your language whether or not you spend time teaching them. It's simply the natural order of things. Sometimes they even pick up on a few extra things that you didn't mean for them to catch. Stub a toe and curse just once and your kid won't hesitate for even the slightest second in storing that word for future use. Even if the context is all wrong. But what has completely amazed me lately is Alex's ability to make 'new' words. For a quite awhile now, he's discovered the glorious ability to shorten the English language utilizing the ever present apostrophe. I'm, you're, we're, they're...the list goes on. But perhaps my favorite word that he's developed all on his own is 'amn't. "Amn't??" you exclaim. "What on Earth is Amn't?? Sounds like a cuss word." Well, this word does not belong on the forbidden word list. He has somehow learned to string together 'am' and 'not' thus creating, 'amn't'. He uses this word all of the time. Seriously. All of the time. Example:

Me: Alex, what are you doing?
Alex: I amn't doing anything!

or...

Me: Alexander! You stop being mean to your sister!
Alex: I amn't being mean to her!

or even...

Me: Don't do that please.
Alex: I amn't!

I try and try to correct him, but he's adamant on using this new word. I give it two years and it will be in the urban dictionary.
